Mesa is my special buddy. She’s a sensitive people lover, smart, agile, and a compulsive fetcher. She recently turned over my household monitoring to Joe. She used to “guard” the door when I disappeared into the bathroom, leaving whatever she was doing to lay outside the door until I came out again. Now that’s Joe’s job. She is a quiet house dog. But I’m not sure she ever gets tired. Mesa’s favorite things are her precious soft-bite frisbee, little wads of paper (she loves it when the mail comes—mmmm bill envelopes), the tracking bag, sheep, and food. Her hobbies are trying to lay on my pillow, being scratched under the chin, dropping a toy in my lap then waiting to see if it moves…oh yah…and staring at me. Her favorite job is bringing me things I point at.
Mesa is fun to train. She picks up new skills and verbal commands quickly, really enjoys working, and sometimes seems to be reading my mind. Weirdly enough, this has made tracking very difficult for us. Without looking back, she reads my every movement and attitude as a cue. Similarly, when we’re herding I have to be aware of every little movement on my part. She used to be a horrible jumper when greeting people. I often wondered how we ever made it through the CGC. But recently we’ve had a breakthrough! We have started greeting strangers with all four feet on the floor. I can never be sure what she’ll do around people she knows…she greets all familiar people like a long lost best friend. This may include a 4′-5′ vertical jump to insert her tongue,…well…just…bleh. Besides playing fetch and sitting on the couch (usually simultaneously), we track, hike, herd, practice tricks, obedience, & rally, dabble with agility, and play with Kaia & Joe…but not all at the same time. ![]()
